The genesis of the artwork
Rio de Colores 3 is a contemporary work by Elvira Lopez, measuring 156 x 106 cm, built up in hand-shaped relief and brought to life with flows of pigmented Epoxy. On a subtly textured white ground, the artist unfolds a river of colour folded into meanders — a fluid, joyful and resolutely contemporary visual signature.
The composition is organised around a continuous ribbon of broad, regular curves that travels across the canvas in successive hairpin turns. Along this path, the colours glide into one another in luminous gradients of pink, orange, yellow, turquoise and indigo, like a current changing hue over the course of its journey. The eye follows the meander without ever stopping, carried by the precision of the line and the softness of the transitions.
The treatment of the material gives the work its singular character: the hand-shaped relief structures the ribbon and lifts it away from the ground, while the pigmented Epoxy brings shine, depth and transparency. The surrounding white, deliberately calm and textured, makes the colours sing and lends the whole an immediate graphic elegance.
