Born on 31 July 1914 in Courbevoie, Louis de Funès waited until his forties before becoming, in the 1960s, the most popular actor in French cinema.
His explosive physicality, his tantrums and his grimaces worked wonders in Le Gendarme de Saint-Tropez, Le Corniaud and La Grande Vadrouille (1966), the biggest French box-office hit for decades. From La Folie des grandeurs to Rabbi Jacob and the Gendarme saga, he strung together one triumph after another.
