The Gendarme of Saint-Tropez — the boule is away
The Gendarme of Saint-Tropez — the boule is away
The work. Four gendarmes in summer uniform and képis play pétanque on a dusty court beneath the pines. At the centre, Louis de Funès has just released the boule, his body thrown off balance and his mouth open, while the others follow its path. The full-length framing captures bright southern light and the precise physical comedy of the group. This framed movie photo preserves the scene’s distinctive screen atmosphere.

The film. Directed by Jean Girault and released in 1964, The Gendarme of Saint-Tropez gave Louis de Funès one of his first defining screen successes. He plays Chief Marshal Ludovic Cruchot, transferred to the French Riviera, where rigid discipline repeatedly collides with the relaxed life of Saint-Tropez.
