The film. Directed by and starring Clint Eastwood in 2008, Gran Torino follows Walt Kowalski, a retired autoworker and Korean War veteran, in a declining Detroit neighbourhood. Gruff and solitary, he reluctantly bonds with his Hmong neighbours — a signature late-career role, between redemption and passing the torch, often ranked among the most striking of his acting career.
