About this photo

Brigitte Bardot *Shalako*: The Twilight of an Icon in the American West

Filmed in the arid landscapes of Almería, Spain, *Shalako* marks the unique collaboration between Brigitte Bardot Sean Connery the direction of Edward Dmytryk. This 1968 Anglo-Spanish production features the French actress in an unusual Western role, playing Countess Irina Lazaar alongside the actor who portrayed James Bond. Filming was particularly grueling for Brigitte Bardot, who was discovering the world of European Westerns under difficult weather conditions.

Adapted from the novel by Louis L'Amour, the film grossed $3.2 million at the U.S. box office. This film marks a pivotal period in Bardot's career, between her successes of the 1960s and her retirement from film in 1973. Shalako remains one of the actress’s rare forays into the Western genre, reflecting her desire to explore new cinematic territories.

An unlikely encounter between a French icon and the Wild West, frozen in time.
