Mixed media has held a central place in modern and contemporary art since the Cubist collages of Picasso and Braque. It consists in combining, within a single work, several materials and processes — paint, pasted paper, sand, coating, metallic leaf — to create a richness of textures and a relief that paint alone cannot achieve. Each surface becomes a field of experimentation where the matter tells as much as the image.

What is mixed media in painting?
Mixed media refers to a work that combines, on a single support, at least two different materials or processes: for example acrylic and collage, paint and sand, or ink and gold leaf. This freedom allows the artist to layer the coats, to play on matter and relief, and to obtain a depth impossible with a single technique. Often abstract, mixed media produces highly textured paintings where the light catches the reliefs and animates the surface throughout the day.
What materials make up a mixed media work?
The possibilities are vast. One frequently finds acrylic and pigments, pasted paper or fabric, sand, coatings and structuring pastes to create relief, metallic leaf or resin for gloss effects, sometimes natural or recovered elements. The artist chooses and layers these materials according to the emotion sought. It is this mastered combination that gives each mixed media work its unique character and its very particular depth.
How do you care for a relief / matter work?
Relief works are dusted gently, with a wide, soft brush or a dry cloth, following the direction of the matter so as not to catch the reliefs. Avoid water and products, which can mark the collages and structuring pastes. Keep the painting away from direct sun and humidity, and handle it by the frame rather than by the surface. Grazing light highlights the relief. Cared for in this way, a mixed media work keeps all its texture over time.
