Born on 24 March 1930 in Indiana, Steve McQueen had a difficult youth and enlisted in the Marines before taking to the stage in New York.
Cinema revealed him in The Magnificent Seven (1960) and The Great Escape (1963), but it was Bullitt (1968) and its Ford Mustang chase through the streets of San Francisco that raised him to the rank of myth. Nicknamed the “King of Cool”, the highest-paid actor of his time, he established a laconic, independent and magnetic hero, from The Thomas Crown Affair to Papillon.
A passionate driver, he realised his dream with Le Mans (1971) and collected motorcycles and racing cars — Porsche, Jaguar, Ferrari.
