How is a bronze sculpture made (the lost-wax technique)?
Lost-wax casting is a millennia-old process in several stages. The artist creates a model, from which a mould is taken; a layer of wax is poured into it that faithfully reproduces the original. This wax is coated in a refractory mould, then heated: the wax melts and flows out — it is 'lost' — leaving a hollow imprint. Molten bronze is poured in, matching the smallest detail, then cools. Finally comes the chasing and patina work, carried out by hand. This process explains the fineness and the value of fine art bronze.
What is the difference between an original bronze and a numbered edition?
In sculpture, 'original' does not always mean a single unique piece. From the same model, the artist may authorise a limited edition: each cast is then individually cast, chased and patinated, then numbered (for example 3/8) and signed. These numbered bronzes are all originals in the sense of the art market, unlike a mere later reproduction. Some of our pieces are unique, others produced in a limited edition; in every case, the certificate states the exact status of the work.
How do I care for a bronze and its patina?
A bronze needs little upkeep but some care. Dust it regularly with a soft, dry cloth; avoid abrasive or chemical products that attack the patina. Once or twice a year, applying a thin layer of microcrystalline wax nourishes and protects the surface, especially for a bronze displayed outdoors where moisture and salt can alter the patina. If in doubt about an old or precious work, entrust cleaning to a professional. Well cared for, a bronze passes through the generations without losing any of its beauty.
