About this photo

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - Lee Van Cleef in the Sad Hill Cemetery

This photograph captures Lee Van Cleef in his iconic role as Sentenza, alias Angel Eyes, in Sergio Leone’s 1966 masterpiece. The American actor, recognizable by his piercing gaze and angular features, perfectly embodies “the Villain” of this Dollar Trilogy, which revolutionized the spaghetti western. The international actors of that era left their mark on cinema with their magnetic presence.

Produced by Alberto Grimaldi on a modest budget of $1.2 million, the film went on to gross over $25 million at the global box office. Van Cleef, a former accountant who became an actor after World War II, found a new artistic lease on life in Italian Westerns alongside Clint Eastwood Eli Wallach. Ennio Morricone’s score would elevate this cult classic, ranked among the greatest Westerns in the history of cinema.

A gaze that defies eternity, captured in one of cinema’s most legendary showdowns.
