The film. Directed by Tony Scott and released in 1986, Top Gun follows elite US Navy pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Tom Cruise plays Maverick and Kelly McGillis plays civilian instructor Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood. The film’s music became central to its legacy, with “Take My Breath Away” winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
