The film. Billy Wilder’s 1955 comedy The Seven Year Itch stars Tom Ewell as publisher Richard Sherman and Marilyn Monroe as his unnamed upstairs neighbour, credited simply as The Girl. The image comes from the celebrated subway-grate sequence that helped make Monroe’s white dress an enduring symbol of Hollywood cinema.
