The film. In The Great Escape (John Sturges, 1963), Steve McQueen plays Captain Virgil Hilts, an irrepressible American prisoner in a German stalag. The long motorcycle sequence — much of which he performed himself — brought the film, the actor and his Triumph into the legend of adventure cinema.
