The work. Wearing a light-coloured raincoat over a dark roll-neck, Steve McQueen stands beside his Ford Mustang fastback with the driver's door open. The car, bearing registration JJZ 109, occupies the foreground of a sloping San Francisco street lined with bay-windowed houses. This framed black-and-white landscape photograph gives the car as much presence as the actor.

The film. Directed by Peter Yates in 1968, Bullitt follows a San Francisco homicide detective assigned to protect a witness, before the case goes off the rails. The film became legendary for its Ford Mustang GT 390 chase through the city's steep streets — nearly ten minutes without music, carried by the sheer roar of the engines, which redefined the action scene.
