About this photo
Jane Birkin amid the creative buzz of Saint-Germain-des-Prés
This 1968 photograph captures Jane Birkin in the bohemian atmosphere of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, the Parisian arts district where she was living at the time with Serge Gainsbourg. Having recently arrived from London following her success in Michelangelo Antonioni’s *Blow-Up*, this French actress by adoption quickly made her mark on the French cultural scene. The year 1968 marked a turning point with her meeting Gainsbourg on the set of Pierre Grimblat’s “Slogan.”
The Gainsbourg-Birkin duo revolutionized French music with "Je t'aime... moi non plus," which was banned in several countries but sold over 4 million copies. Jane Birkin then went on to star in a string of cult films: "La Piscine" with Alain Delon and Agatha Christie's "Death on the Nile," building an eclectic filmography that spanned arthouse cinema and international productions. Her androgynous style and English accent became her artistic signature.
An intimate portrait of the Franco-British icon who embodied Parisian elegance in the 1960s.
