The film was a considerable success with more than 4 million admissions in France, cementing the popularity of the Maigret character in cinema. Gabin would once again play the inspector in "Maigret and the St. Fiacre Case" in 1959, creating a memorable pairing. His interpretation remains an absolute reference to this day, influencing all subsequent adaptations of Simenon's character.
