About this photo
Jean Gabin as Inspector Maigret at the Café de la Paix
This photograph captures Jean Gabin in one of his most iconic roles, that of Inspector Maigret, created by Georges Simenon. Filmed in 1958 under the direction of Jean Delannoy, *Maigret Sets a Trap* marks Jean Gabin’s first cinematic portrayal of the famous detective. The actor had personally met with Simenon to immerse himself in the character, an encounter that profoundly influenced his performance.
The film was a huge success, drawing more than 4 million viewers in France and cementing the popularity of the Maigret character on the big screen. Gabin would once again portray the commissioner in "Maigret and the Saint-Fiacre Affair" in 1959, creating a memorable two-part series. His portrayal remains the definitive standard to this day, influencing all subsequent adaptations of Simenon’s character.
This fine art print is hand-framed in our studios and limited to just 30 copies. Printed on fine art paper in a 70x50 cm format, it is enhanced by a solid wood frame and protected by 3mm crystal glass. Each piece comes with a certificate of authenticity and a hologram, and ships within 48 hours.
A truly exceptional film that captures the perfect meeting of a legendary figure of French cinema and one of literature’s most famous detectives.
