Alien (1979) — Ellen Ripley aboard the Narcissus

The work. Alone in the cockpit of the Narcissus, Ellen Ripley raises both arms towards the overhead control panel. Her white vest and exposed posture contrast with the cramped machinery around her. The colour photograph captures the deceptive calm of Alien’s final act, when the survivor believes the threat has finally ended. The film. Directed by Ridley Scott and released in 1979, Alien follows the crew of the commercial spaceship Nostromo after they encounter a lethal extraterrestrial organism. Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley became one of science fiction’s defining protagonists, and the final sequence aboard the Narcissus sustains the film’s tension until its last confrontation.
