The film. Directed by John Sturges in 1963, The Great Escape recounts the mass breakout of Allied prisoners from a German camp during the Second World War. Steve McQueen plays Captain Virgil Hilts, whose motorcycle jump over the barbed wire remains one of cinema's most famous scenes — a stunt the actor, an accomplished rider, was determined to get as close to as possible.
