The film. Directed by Peter Yates in 1968, Bullitt follows a San Francisco homicide detective assigned to protect a witness, before the case goes off the rails. The film became legendary for its Ford Mustang GT 390 chase through the city's steep streets — nearly ten minutes without music, carried by the sheer roar of the engines, which redefined the action scene.
