Gran Torino - Clint Eastwood Confronts Urban Violence in Detroit
This photograph captures Clint Eastwood in one of his most poignant roles, that of Walt Kowalski in *Gran Torino*. Filmed in the deindustrialized neighborhoods of Detroit, this film marked Clint Eastwood’s 29th directorial effort, at the age of 78. The actor-director had initially envisioned this project as his cinematic swan song, intending to bring his acting career to a close.
Produced by Warner Bros. on a modest budget of $33 million, *Gran Torino* grossed $270 million at the global box office and became one of the biggest hits of Eastwood’s career. The film sensitively addresses racial tensions and America’s industrial decline, confirming the social storytelling talent of the director of *Unforgiven* and *Million Dollar Baby*.
