This photograph captures one of the most touching mentor-student relationships in cinema, taken in the famous training room at Mighty Mick's Boxing Gym. Directed by John G. Avildsen, this first installment of the Rocky saga was shot on a shoestring budget of just $1 million, forcing Sylvester Stallone write the screenplay in three and a half days after watching the Muhammad Ali vs. Chuck Wepner fight.
The film grossed over $225 million at the global box office and won three Oscars, including Best Picture in 1977. Burgess Meredith, a 69-year-old veteran at the time of filming, brought exceptional dramatic depth to the character of Mickey Goldmill, creating perfect chemistry with Stallone’s Rocky and determined Rocky . This performance earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
