About this photo
Steve McQueen the wheel of his Porsche 917 on the Circuit de la Sarthe
Taken in June 1970 at the legendary Circuit de la Sarthe, this photograph captures Steve McQueen in his element during the filming of Le Mans. John Sturges, director of this ambitious production, had insisted that the Californian actor actually drive the race cars himself. McQueen, an accomplished driver, reached speeds of 240 km/h behind the wheel of his Gulf Porsche 917, creating a rare cinematic authenticity.
Despite a massive budget of $7.5 million, *Le Mans* enjoyed only moderate commercial success, grossing just $12 million worldwide. Yet this cult classic by John Sturges has become a definitive landmark in motorsport cinema, inspiring generations of filmmakers. McQueen’s obsessive passion for speed shines through in every race sequence.
An icon of freedom frozen in the eternity of the scorching asphalt.
