About this photo
Steve McQueen wheel of the Porsche 917 K on the Circuit de la Sarthe
This iconic image captures Steve McQueen the cockpit of the legendary Porsche 917 K during the filming of the movie "Le Mans" in 1971. Directed by Lee H. Katzin, this passion project of Steve McQueen was filmed largely on the actual 24 Hours of Le Mans circuit, with McQueen performing most of the stunts himself behind the wheel of this 630-horsepower machine capable of reaching 380 km/h.
Despite a massive budget of $7.5 million and the use of real race cars, "Le Mans" was only a moderate commercial success. However, the film has achieved cult status among car and racing enthusiasts, largely thanks to the authentic racing footage shot during the actual 1970 race. This collaboration with John Sturges cemented McQueen’s reputation as an actor-stuntman.
A truly exceptional piece that captures the legendary McQueen’s passion for cars in his most authentic role.
