About this photo
Sean Connery *You Only Live Twice* - Blofeld's volcanic base
Filmed at Pinewood Studios in 1967, Lewis Gilbert’s *You Only Live Twice* marks the visual peak of the Bond series with its colossal volcanic set designed by Ken Adam. This Sean Connery film boasted a record budget of $9.5 million, making Blofeld’s lair the largest set ever built in Europe at the time.
Bond's fifth adventure, the film grossed $111 million at the global box office and established Donald Pleasence as the iconic Blofeld. The collaboration between Lewis Gilbert and producer Albert Broccoli gave rise to groundbreaking action sequences, notably the final battle in the 38-meter-wide artificial crater, which required 700 extras.
The deadly charm of cinema's most famous spy, captured for eternity in a photograph.
