About this photo
Jean-Claude Van Damme in *Bloodsport* - The Hong Kong Kumite Tournament
Filmed at Golden Harvest Studios in Hong Kong in 1987, *Bloodsport* marked Jean-Claude Van Damme’s breakthrough in film. Directed by Newt Arnold, the film is loosely based on the stories of Frank Dux, who claimed to have participated in the legendary Kumite tournament. Van Damme, then 27 years old, performed his own spectacular stunts, including his famous split between two chairs.
With a modest budget of $1.5 million, *Bloodsport* grossed over $65 million at the global box office, catapulting the "Muscles of Brussels" to international stardom. This unexpected success launched Van Damme’s Hollywood career and influenced an entire generation of martial arts films in the 1990s, from *Kickboxer* to *Universal Soldier*.
A frozen moment in time when the young Van Damme forges his legend in the Kumite arena.
