About this photo

Brigitte Bardot "Vie privée" - Behind the scenes on the set in 1962

This rare photograph captures Brigitte Bardot the filming of Louis Malle’s *Vie privée*, an autobiographical film in which the actress plays Jill, an international star hounded by the paparazzi—a haunting reflection of her own life. The New Wave director was directing his muse in what remains one of the French actress’s most personal and painful roles.

Filmed in 1961 and released the following year, the film reveals a fragile and melancholic BB, a far cry from her usual scandalous image. Marcello Mastroianni starred opposite Bardot in this Franco-Italian co-production which, despite a mixed critical reception, remains a poignant portrait of fame and its ravages. The feature film marks a pivotal moment in the career of the 1960s icon.

A frozen moment that reveals the vulnerability hidden behind the Bardot myth.
