Steve McQueen *The Great Escape* - The barbed wire at Stalag Luft III
This on-set photograph captures Steve McQueen his legendary role as Virgil Hilts, the “Cooler King,” during the filming of *The Great Escape* in 1963. Directed by John Sturges in Munich studios, the film is based on the real-life escape from the Stalag Luft III prisoner-of-war camp. McQueen, a motorcycle enthusiast, insisted on performing most of the stunts himself, with the exception of the final barbed-wire jump, which was handled by stuntman Bud Ekins.
Produced by United Artists with a budget of $4 million, *The Great Escape* grossed $11.7 million at the U.S. box office and definitively established McQueen as an international star. The exceptional cast included Charles Bronson, James Garner, and Richard Attenborough. This film marked a turning point in the actor’s career; he went on to star in *Bullitt* and *Le Mans*, cementing his status as an action movie icon.
