About this photo
Sean Connery with his jet pack in *Thunderball*
This jet pack sequence from the 1965 film *Thunderball* remains one of the most daring stunts in cinema history. Directed by Terence Young, the scene required the use of a real Bell Rocket Belt piloted by professional stuntman Bill Suitor. Sean Connery wore the equipment only for close-ups, as the jet pack could only fly for 21 seconds with a full tank.
Thunderball grossed $141.2 million at the global box office, setting a franchise record at the time. Produced by Kevin McClory and Cubby Broccoli, the film marked the pinnacle of the Connery era with its revolutionary gadgets and spectacular stunts, which set the standard for modern action films.
The elegance of cinema's most famous spy, defying the laws of gravity.
